Folk for MS / White Horse Ceilidhs Charity Ceilidh Dance

FRIDAY 6th JUNE 2008 – OLD MILL HALL, GROVE

WHAPWEASEL with GORDON POTTS

Voted BBC 2 Folk awards best dance band for 2005. Whapweasel are at the forefront of contemporary English roots music weaving colourful strands of folk, rock, ska and East European sounds into a wonderful melee that will leave no toe untapped. Whapweasel could very probably be regarded as the ultimate modern ceilidh band, which is no doubt why they're in constant demand. The eclectic instrumental complement - melodeons, cittern, two saxes, trombone, keyboards, guitar, bass and drums - gives a clue to the lively, energetic night in store. The band play all original compositions by band members which (rather ingeniously) manage to sound solidly traditional in whatever musical/world idiom it manages to end up. In recent years, Whapweasel have become a fixture on the national festival circuit, but they’re as much at home in small village halls as in vast festival marquees and they continue to set new benchmarks for excitement, innovativeness and sheer danceability. Whapweasel will be joined by “King of the Callers”, the legendary, Gordon Potts.

This evening provides a great opportunity to get a group of friends together and treat yourselves to a night of excellent entertainment while supporting a worthy cause.

The ceilidh starts at 8pm and ends at midnight. There will be a licensed bar with real ales from West Berks Brewery and a selection of rolls / sandwiches on sale.

Review of the 2007 FfMS / White Horse Ceilidh

The second FfMS Ceilidh held on Friday 8th June was a roaring success on every level.  The man in charge for the evening, caller Will Hall, did a fantastic job in connecting with everyone on the dance floor.  He chose dances to please the e-ceilidh experts, whilst professionally guiding through the pleasing number of newcomers to the ceilidh scene, who turned up to see what it was all about and loved it!

The band, Random, were on top form with the punchy duelling melodeons of Paul and Saul, perfectly complemented by Glynn’s cheeky trombone bass lines really lifting the dancers.  We were also lucky enough to dance to Saul playing solo on several occasions which took the atmosphere to another level.

Time came for the Morris display and local team Icknield Way did their usual slick show, showing off 5 of their new young recruits, mostly pinched from Grove Scout Troop.

So, not only was it great to see so many new, young, fresh faces enjoying the festival like atmosphere, but, thanks to the generosity of the band, dancers, volunteers and supporters, the evening raised over £600 for FfMS.

White Horse Ceilidhs run a series of dances in Grove Village Hall with the aim to bring new, young people into an already thriving local Folk scene. These events combine English Ceilidh (energetic barn dances) with performances from local bands and dance groups. Ceilidhs take place roughly every other month and have already attracted a lively, enthusiastic following. Click here to visit the White Horse Ceilidhs website for more information.
